Believe it or not, this Christmas tree at Berjaya Langkawi Resort is built of 4,600 recycled plastic bottles! Standing at 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide, it is the resort’s most eco-friendly Christmas tree thus far. It will be displayed in the resort’s lobby till 31 December 2022.

FROM WASTE TO WONDER

At Berjaya Hotels & Resorts, we are aware of how important it is to conserve natural resources and reduce our environmental footprint. With this in mind, instead of using a real tree to bring festive cheer, the resort opts for a greener Christmas by putting recycled plastic bottles to good use.

A total of 4,600 plastic bottles was collected in the span of 3 months. These were found along the resort’s shoreline and under its chalets during ‘gotong-royong’ or communal cleaning activities.

SETTING UP AN ECO-FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS TREE

Here’s the interesting part! The decorations on the Christmas tree are marine debris such as fishing nets and ropes found during the ‘gotong-royong’. The resort only added some lights for an aesthetic touch.

Six staff participated to set up the tree. One of them shared, “A Greener Christmas project has taught us that even unwanted materials can have a second life. Items that would have been thrown away can be repurposed and made into something interesting. We had a lot of fun assembling our DIY Christmas tree! Since the clean-up, we’ve also learned that we should recycle more to keep our environment clean.”

ADD A GREEN TWIST TO YOUR CELEBRATION

The next time you find a bunch of old stuff lying around, unleash your creativity and DIY a Christmas tree out of these pieces. You can also make a difference by using gift wrappers made from recycled materials or declining unnecessary packaging using plastic bags. Every effort counts. Reduce, reuse, and recycle this holiday season!
